Mountaintop Dining:

Barga has a number of commendable restaurants: Trattoria da Riccardo, on the "Fosso"offers local specialties and a terrace with a stunning view. L'Osteria, with its terrace in a great people watching setting on Piazza Angelio serves delicious local dishes. L'Altana, at the Porta Reale also serves great meals in an intimate setting. Schiacciaguai in Barga Vecchia is a fine dining experience.

For the adventuresome diner, any of the following would make a delightful side trip within about 30 minutes of Barga.

As well as enjoying a hearty meal, you'll have a feast for the eyes driving through beautiful villages with panoramic views along the route and when you arrive. As remote as they seem, they are not difficult to find. Road signage in these isolated areas can be more reliable than in the more trafficked ones and you can always ask, everyone knows these restaurants. It's a good idea to call ahead to make sure they're open.

Above the city of Gallicano, past Molazzana, at Sassi there is a restaurant run by the charming Nesti family. A recent meal began with a delicious assortment of ten sample sized portions of spreads and salads ranging from olive paste, creamed red onion, marinated herring, to bean and onion salad and aromatic farro salad. The first course was fresh maccheroni (here that is lasagna sized pasta) with funghi. The second course was Tagliata, grilled rare beef, sliced thin and marinated in herbed light oil. Wine, mineral water, liqueur and coffee included, the bill came to 40 euros for two. Il Totto, 42 via Centrale, Sassi 0583 760 061 or 338 5854243

In Crocialetto, on a crest over the Ania River above the village of Coreglia Antelminelli, there is a family run restaurant and pizzeria, (pizza is traditionally served in the evening). At about 15k from Barga it can be reached following the scenic Tiglio Road toward Coreglia and then left at the Roman arches. Da Nara. Localita Crocialetto, Coreglia Antelminelli 0583 78350

Just beyond the village of Sommocolonia, above the city of Barga, there is: Osteria La Mocchia da Lorenzo, 1 Localita La Mocchia, Barga 0583 722 202

A little farther afield but still manageable at about 45 minutes:

In the beautiful setting of a Monastery the road to La Grotta del Vento: Antica Trattoria dell'Ermita 0583 767 020

Just beyond Castelnuovo on the road to Forte dei Marmi at Isola Santa: La Ceragetta, 0583 667 004

Toward Lucca at Tereglio: La Crepa, 0583 762 113
